Republican Lawmakers say, "Mend FEMA Don't do Away with it"
For all the complaints about the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) from the past—thinking about a future disaster era without FEMA is distressing to some—even Republican Lawmakers.
See this quote below:
“President Donald Trump’s suggestions he might shut down the federal agency charged with responding to disasters are running into trouble with Republican lawmakers.
Trump’s remarks last week that the Federal Emergency Management Agency might need to “go away” reignited debate over how the federal and state governments split the financial and logistical responsibility for disaster response. But deeply red states are experiencing some of the costliest disasters, and lawmakers from those states fear eliminating FEMA could leave them on the hook for increasingly expensive bills. GOP lawmakers are open to overhauling FEMA but flatly reject the idea of abolishing the agency.”
Afterall, it is Red States that can bear the brunt of significant natural disasters as we have seen Kentucky and West Virgina as they endured significant flood events that killed dozens of people. Not to mention, we are now in “hurricane season” the possibility of a large scale catastrophe impacting the Gulf Coast and/or East Coast.
