congress weighing in on FEMA restructuring plan

All the conversation that the Trump Administration has created about the future for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has energized others to “get in the game,” Congress counters Trump with massive FEMA restructuring plan

Will this bill and the hearings around it accomplish anything? Likely not! It did get the Acting FEMA Administrator fired for his testimony that ran counter to public pronouncements about the future of FEMA—it should be done away with as an agency.

As highlighted in the article, there are some good provisions in the bill. Especially rewarding states that focus more on pre-disaster mitigation.

For now, this bill and all the talk and recent actions to shift more disaster recovery costs to the states will continue…until, there is a huge disaster and the system as it is configured, with reduced FEMA capability comes crashing down. It always takes a major disaster to enact changes or a reversal of policies to get elected official’s attention and then action.

Hurricane season is almost here!
