Maybe it is a fool’s errand to postulate who might replace the current Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS). However, it is clear that Kristi Noem has been “skating on thin ice” of late (pun intended). Tom Homan has been sent to Minnesota to take charge there and achieve better coordination with the Governor and local elected officials. He will also report directly to President Trump and not to his boss, Kristi Noem.

Likely a key aspect of her departure is having a successor identified, one who will support the President’s immigration deportation agenda, and not be such a lightening rod for administration criticism. You also need a place for her to go! Back in local government we’d hear something like, “I want to thank ____ for their contributions to the work of this government. S/he will be working on special projects to support the ongoing work that needs to be done.” Meaning, they have about six months to find another job. The departee would say something like, “It has been the honor of my life to serve in _______ administration.”

For the purposes of emergency management, having the next DHS Secretary be a governor (which Noem was) would be helpful. They have some understanding of the mission of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) or what’s left of it, and they know the importance of FEMA to states.

Personally, I think it about time the administration stopped harvesting FOX News talent for positions in the administration, and we replace one of them that was taken with Noem. Working at FOX she can say anything she wants and not get blow-back for spouting off about something she knows nothing about. She has the hair and the look to fit right in! I will miss Homeland Security Barbie when she does leave. She looked terrific posing on a horse, in ICE tactical gear, riding a 4X4, touring a prison in El Salvador, etc.
