the lessons will continue to be taught, but not learned

I thought this was an accurate assessment for some aspects of the Texas flood disaster, Why Texas’ floods are a warning for the rest of the country

Some of those lessons include:

  • Climate change is changing risks. The past is not a good predictor of future disasters

  • You think you can’t afford disaster mitigation—so roll the dice and hope you don’t have a billion dollar disaster

  • Taxes fund public safety. Emergency management is part of the equation

  • Emergency managers should not be part time positions in law enforcement the fire service

  • With less federal assistance in dollars (per this administration’s intent), states and local governments will need to foot the bill

  • Building codes and land zoning prevents deaths and destruction

  • Weather Alert Radios ($50.00?) are a simple cost-effective warning system for camps and people

  • The National Weather Service is a vital partner to emergency management

Lastly, just remember the North Carolina record flooding in January. It has only been six months. Completely different areas of the nation. New Mexico just had a flood event in the last few days.
