conflict on report concerning fema is heating up

Per the Washington Post, there is this article Noem at odds with Trump-appointed panel over future of FEMA

I just did an earlier blog post today about the date for the final report to be covered in a meeting (December 11th) of the counsel that was appointed to review the future of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

There are plenty of things to say about the potential for the Department of Homeland Security to ignore key recommendations coming from the council. By all appearances, it appears that Secretary Noem is as the article put it, “is putting her thumb on the scale” for what the final report recommends. As was considered likely at the beginning of the process, the administration was looking to have “the appearance of wanting a review” but then knowing that in the end, they will do what they want to do.

  • Cut the disaster funding to a 50/50 split between states and the federal government

  • Move FEMA to Texas

  • Cut the FEMA workforce (already cut by 25%) in half

  • Minimize the role of FEMA in responding to disasters

  • Move most aspects of disaster recovery to other agencies (interestingly, the article say to retain debris removal at FEMA—but that is already a Corps of Engineers role)

I’m reminded of the words of Jesus from the cross, “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” I’m also reminded of the movie Dumb and Dumber
