My father was a railroad engineer. Sometimes he would come home with a story and say, “Is this any way to run a railroad?”
The same thought came to my mind when I saw headline at Bloomberg News, “FEMA Tells Staff to Name Whistleblowers or Risk Losing Job.”
There is another huge morale boost for the employees who have not had their jobs eliminated already. Loyalty, trust, any semblance of fairness or care for those who work for you is well past gone. I guess they will have to give everyone a lie detector test to identify the culprits and “bring them to justice.” All of the above comes from some internal agency criticism of the administration’s cutting of grant funds.
Actions like this is going on in other federal agencies too.
Then there is this, In surprise move, head of US military for Latin America to step down Not everyone is a four-star general and can perhaps end their civilian or military career on his terms. What my “spidy senses” are telling me is that he was uncomfortable being the commander and carrying out the directives for extra-judicial executions of drug runners. Maybe I’m wrong…
We have seen this type of behavior in another nation, 'If it’s drugs, you shoot and kill,' Duterte orders Philippine custom chief Duterte was the President at the time and almost 6,000 drug runners were killed. This was back in 2020 and his actions were praised by then President Trump. See this story from back then, Trump told the Philippine president that he’s doing a “great job” killing drug dealers
As we look to the future the basic question for all of us is this, “Does the end justify the means?” Or, on this particular issue maybe you love drug dealers? Do you care about having a justice system?
All of the above will matter to you as working professionals. I had this conversation with former FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor on a previous Disaster Zone Podcast. He agreed with me that as you go up in the ranks of responsibility, sooner or later your personal ethics will be tested.
