hurricane Erin a near miss

It was predicted to be an active hurricane season. The first “biggie storm” in the Atlantic is Erin and it looks to be one where we’ll dodge a Category 4 bullet.

The storm is arching out into the Atlantic Ocean and going up the East Coast without making landfall. It is important to note that the storm can still make for higher tides and other wave actions on the coast of the United States.

Remember that “one dodged bullet” does not a hurricane season make. While hurricane season runs between June 1st and the end of November, the most active portion of the season when most hurricanes have a major impact on the United States is now.

Super Storm Sandy didn’t occur until late in October. Being vigilant and paying attention to the media when you hear “hurricane” is the prudent thing to do.

And finally, we are seeing major flooding events from hurricanes that turn into tropical storms as they move inland. Be prepared for flash flooding and surface water flooding where maybe you have never experienced that type of flooding in the past. Just ask North Carolina about that!
